Definition of Noun:
A noun is a word used to name a person, place, thing, idea or feeling. It answers the question of who or what.Examples: Ram, Delhi, Book, Honesty, Dog, School, Mountain.
Kinds of Noun:
(i) Proper Noun:
It is the name of a particular person, place or thing.
Examples: Mahatma Gandhi, India, London, Mount Everest, Bible, Taj
Mahal.
(ii) Common Noun:
It is the name given to a class of persons, places or things.
Examples: Boy, Girl, Teacher, City, River, Country, Animal, Book.
(iii) Collective Noun:
It is the name of a collection or group of persons or things taken together as
one.
Examples: Army (of soldiers), Team (of players), Flock (of sheep), Crowd
(of people), Bundle (of sticks), Class (of students).
(iv) Abstract Noun:
It is the name of a quality, idea or state that we can only think of but cannot
touch.
Examples: Honesty, Kindness, Bravery, Truth, Love, Freedom, Anger,
Childhood, Happiness.
(v) Material Noun:
It is the name of a substance or matter from which things are made.
Examples: Gold, Silver, Iron, Cotton, Wood, Water, Oil, Rice, Milk,
Plastic.
Noun as Gender
Nouns also show the
gender of a person or animal. There are four kinds of genders:
(i) Masculine Gender:
Refers to male persons or animals.
Examples: Man, Boy, King, Lion.
(ii) Feminine Gender:
Refers to female persons or animals.
Examples: Woman, Girl, Queen, Lioness.
(iii) Common Gender:
Refers to either male or female.
Examples: Child, Student, Teacher, Friend.
(iv) Neuter Gender:
Refers to things without life.
Examples: Book, Pen, Table, Mountain.

Noun as Number
Nouns also show number,
that is, whether they are singular (one) or plural (more than one).
(i) Singular Number:
Refers to one person or thing.
Examples: Boy, Book, Pen, Tree.
(ii) Plural Number:
Refers to more than one person or thing.
Examples: Boys, Books, Pens, Trees.
Some nouns form plural
in special ways:

Woman → Women
Child → Children
Foot → Feet
Mouse → Mice
