Exercises

Question 1: Write in your own words two or more sentences of what you understand by the word ‘marginalisation’.
Answer:
Marginalisation refers to the process where certain individuals or groups are pushed to the edge of society and denied access to resources, opportunities, and rights that are available to others. It results in inequality and social exclusion.

Question 2: List two reasons why Adivasis are becoming increasingly marginalised.
Answer:
(i) Adivasis are often displaced from their traditional lands due to mining, dam construction, and other development projects.
(ii) They face discrimination and lack access to education, healthcare, and employment opportunities.

Question 3: Write one reason why you think the Constitution’s safeguards to protect minority communities are very important?
Answer:
These safeguards ensure that minority communities are not discriminated against and are able to preserve their culture, language, and identity, which helps in promoting equality and social justice.

Question 4: Re-read the section on Minorities and Marginalisation. What do you understand by the term minority?
Answer:
A minority is a community that has a smaller population compared to the dominant group in society and often differs in language, religion, or culture. They may need special protection to ensure they are not excluded or oppressed.

Question 5: You are participating in a debate where you have to provide reasons to support the following statement: ‘Muslims are a marginalised community’. Using the data provided in this chapter, list two reasons that you would give.
Answer:
(i) A large proportion of Muslims in India have lower levels of education and employment compared to other communities.
(ii) They often face social discrimination and are sometimes denied equal opportunities in housing and jobs.

Question 6: Imagine that you are watching the Republic Day parade on TV with a friend and she remarks, “Look at these tribals. They look so exotic. And they seem to be dancing all the time”. List three things that you would tell her about the lives of Adivasis in India.
Answer:
(i) Adivasis have a deep knowledge of forests, nature, and traditional medicine, and live in close harmony with the environment.
(ii) They have been displaced from their lands due to development projects, leading to loss of livelihood and identity.
(iii) Their culture is rich and diverse, but they also face challenges like poverty, lack of education, and poor health facilities.

Question 7: In the storyboard you read about how Helen hopes to make a movie on the Adivasi story. Can you help her by developing a short story on Adivasis?
Answer:
In a quiet forest village, lived Meena, a young Adivasi girl who loved nature and tribal music. Her community lived in harmony with the forest, gathering fruits, herbs, and wood. One day, news came that a mining company would take over their land. The villagers protested peacefully, demanding their rights. With the help of a social worker, they took their case to court and won. The story ends with Meena singing joyfully as her people celebrated their right to live on their ancestral land.

Question 8: Would you agree with the statement that economic marginalisation and social marginalisation are interlinked? Why?
Answer:
Yes, economic and social marginalisation are interlinked. When a group is socially excluded, they often lack access to good education and jobs, leading to poverty. Likewise, poor economic conditions make it harder for them to gain respect and equal treatment in society, creating a cycle of marginalisation.
